Raymond Myers "Deh ti ferma ... Que' numi furenti, quell'ombre frementi" SEMIRAMIDE (Rossini) 1969

Born in Sydney in 1939, Raymond Myers initially worked as a clerk for the Medical Benefits Fund of Australia. He won many singing honours early in his career, including the 1962 Shell Scholarship, the Melbourne Sun Aria – singing “Die Frist ist um” from Wagner’s DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER – and the Sydney Opera House Aria. He made his debut with Opera Australia in 1963 singing Don Fernando in FIDELIO and soon followed that with Valentine in FAUST. In 1964 Myers left for Italy, where he lived for eight years. He studied with Luigi Ricci, Musical Director of the Rome Opera, and in 1965 he won the Verdi Gold Medal, which was awarded in the composer’s birthplace, Parma. During this time, he sang in some major Italian opera houses, including the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto. He sang in opera and concert in Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Greece, Austria, France, the USA and New Zealand and was invited to appear with major British companies, including the Edinburgh Festival and Glyndebourne. While in London he performed in concert performances of Rossini’s SEMIRAMIDE and Handel’s MESSIAH (both with Joan Sutherland) and IL TROVATORE (with Gwyneth Jones). From the concert performance of SEMIRAMIDE we hear Azzur's Mad Scene in Act II "Deh ti ferma ... Que' numi furenti, quell'ombre frementi". The Ambrosian Opera Chorus and New Philharmonia Orchestra are conducted by Richard Bonynge in this performance at London's Theatre Royal on February 9th, 1969.
