The placebo effect of “trying” to sleep

Sometimes, we think that what we do to “try” to sleep will make us sleep.

But that's not true.

The only things that can make us sleep are our sleep drive, which strengthens the longer you're awake, and our circadian rhythm.

If you're awake for a long time but still can't sleep, it's because you're worried or anxious.

This worry makes your body stay alert, even when it should be sleepy.

You might have noticed that sometimes, when you try hard to sleep, it seems to work.

But this doesn’t last.

When you do something new to try to sleep, and you think it might work, you feel less anxious.

This is like a placebo effect.

Feeling more confident can make you less anxious, making it easier for your sleep drive to do its job and help you sleep.
