Alex Ovechkin's 51 Goals In 2013-14 (HD)

After winning the Rocket Richard the previous season, expectations were high for Ovechkin headed into the 2013-14 season. It's safe to say that he lived up to them early on. Ending 2013 with 23 goals in 23 games, Ovi picked up right where he left off. 10 goals in his first 10 games to start off the season. It took him only 22 games to score 20, the fastest to that number in his career. After an epic 4-goal night against Tampa, the Great 8 had 26 goals in 29 games, meaning over his last 52 regular season games he'd scored an insane 49 goals. Some wondered if 50-in-50 was possible. His 30th goal came before Christmas in another career best 34th game. While most agreed that his 72-goal pace was unsustainable, many were still predicting him to score 60. After Christmas he saw his pace drop a bit, but he was still on pace for ~60 by the end of January. In early February he left to his native Russia to play in the 2014 Winter Olympics. Playing in their home country, the highly talented Russian National team was expected to at least medal. But once again the Russians favored too many players from the KHL over better NHL counterparts, and the coaching staff misused players worse than Barry Trotz misused Nate Schmidt. The Russians once again failed to meet expectations, and were eliminated by Finland in the quarterfinals. At least they didn't lose 7-3 to Canada again? Similar to 2010, Alex was having trouble scoring when he came back. Ovi scored just 11 times in the final 23 games, and only 2 came at even strength. The Caps, who had been relying on Ovi to contend in the first place, fell out of a playoff berth and finished 9th in the conference, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2007. Ovechkin hit 50 for the first time in 4 years, but many in the hockey media ignored that and focused on his -35 rating. Was he the worst defensive player in the league? No (although I will say he was pretty bad that year). Let's just say that if his line mates knew how to freaking score at even strength his +/- wouldn't have been as bad.
