Rescued Kestrel Chicks Go Back in Nest | Mr & Mrs Kes | Robert E Fuller

When I return the rescued kestrel chicks to their nest, dad Mr Kes barely breaks his stride and simply flies in and serves dinner to all six of his chicks.

Kestrel chicks return

But if their dad is just too busy to notice how he now has six hungry beaks to feed instead of three, the chicks in the nest seem very surprised when I return their siblings. Watch them almost shrink back in shock.

Three chicks rescued

These were the three kestrel chicks I took out of the nest for some intensive care shortly after their mother disappeared.

Mr Kes now a single parent

Mr Kes defied all expectations when he took over sole charge of his kestrel chicks. Male kestrels are known for being incapable of breaking up food small enough for their chicks and normally this is the job of the female.

What's next

Now that, Mr Kes has mastered the skill of feeding his chicks, I hope to leave them all in the nest until they are ready to fledge themselves. Already their flight feathers are growing through.
