Fire management at Wood Buffalo National Park
In Wood Buffalo National Park, the Parks Canada’s Wildfire Management Team oversees and contains fires to help restore landscapes and keep nearby communities safe.
Like storms, avalanches and floods, wildfires might look destructive, but they are a natural part of maintaining ecosystems. Fire increases food sources for animals, encourages habitat variety and abundance, and improves the soil due to the high mineral content in ash.
