Two Seals Saved From Entanglements

Despite their independent nature, seals show a herd instinct. As soon as the first seal runs, the others will follow, even if they don’t see the reason. Rescue runs at Cape Cross seem a lot more chaotic and unorganized than they are when hundreds if not thousands of seals are seen panicking and trying to escape from the rescue team. We use this predictable behavior to scan for more entanglements. Each rescue is different and we have to think of new ways to avoid inflicting any more pain on the already compromised animals. Most seals calm down before they even reach the ocean, or they use the moment to dive into the water to have an early lunch.
