ANTIQUES & VINTAGE BARGAINS FILL A SECOND TOWN FLEA MARKET

It’s not enough just to sell for the first time at a Kansas collector’s market! After hearing several shoppers say they’re headed up the road to White Cloud, curiosity commands me to see what this neighboring village’s flea market has to offer.

A ten minute drive reveals an entire second world of antique and vintage variety! White Cloud turns out to be the original flea market in these parts, and its 50th Anniversary turns up fun discoveries, some at thrift store prices. Vintage hats for $2, a school clock for $5 and a pair of brass cat bookends for $4 are no-brainer buys that prove to sell quickly for me just down the road—and for full retail!

While the town of White Cloud may seem forgotten by time, the semi-annual flea market brings out a great variety of unusual old-time items, from a salesman’s sample chaise lounge to a bakery table that’s a real swinger! It also brings out some real characters, including one guy with an explosion-proof trouble light and another who’s happy to share some knowledge about trick pocket knives. A fellow who likes to show off his flywheel also jumps into frame!

Navajo jewelry, Hull Pottery and other pretty pieces among the piles of farm fresh finds make this a fun show, one where great deals on architectural salvage (like a $65 pedestal sink) share space with elegant barware and Western cafe ware. What was to be a cursory visit to this fun flea market provides enough last-minute buys to get me to set a second evening’s visit on the calendar.

Hay loft trolleys, old general store displays, 1950s standing ashtray, Treasure Craft Sprite, Hall Poppy, Hull open rose, Griswold and Wagner cast iron cookware, Queen and Case pocket knives, yellow stop sign, pest control rack, galvanized steel watering cans, pulleys, road and advertising signs, Pearl Harbor pin, andirons, Siesta Ware, Watt Mexicana, copper powder flask, ice cream table/chairs, children's rifles, wooden doll head perfume bottles, rubber stamp holders, Avon bottles, etc.
