Homeless takeover Tacoma school as pandemic packs hospitals

Donning protective gear, police cleared out an abandoned school building Friday night after roughly a dozen people, including activists and those who are homeless, took it over citing the need for “emergency pandemic housing.”

Across the United States, hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients have reached an all-time high. In Washington state, the story goes the same. As of Saturday, there are a record 762 people receiving care for the virus and now all hospitals are working to figure out ways to keep beds available.

This is the theme of what people could expect when looking to get a COVID-19 test this week in King County. Long lines, lots of cars and folks waiting to get their noses swabbed for the coronavirus.

Now that Pfizer has applied for emergency use approval of its coronavirus vaccine candidate the nationwide distribution plan is more urgent than ever. Swedish Health Services is well on its way. Across the state, 375 health care organizations have applied to be vaccine administrators. Swedish is one of only six that have been approved so far and has designated a team to hammer out every detail so when the vials do begin to flow the bottlenecks will be minimal.
