CRHnews - Listening Bench on Chelmsford's Memory Lane (Laptops/Towers)

ONLY VIEWABLE ON LAPTOP COMPUTERS DUE TO BLUSTERY WINDY CONDITIONS WHICH MESS UP SMARTPHONES
At the capital of Essex where Marconi opened the world's first wireless factory which made SOS equipment for Titanic, the city of Chelmsford has installed its first Listening Bench - thanks to Essex Record Office, and, of course the generous Heritage Lottery Fund.

The solar powered bench plays clips of recordings from the Essex Sound and Video Archive – covering topics such as the First and Second World Wars, shopping, and even a BBC Essex piece on the opening of the Meadows.

The Listening Bench was officially declared open by Beyond the Beehive/Essex Girl and Chelmsford-born author Elizabeth Woodcraft, on a bright, but very blustery Tuesday afternoon, July 18, 2017.

Chelmsford Mayor Cllr Duncan Lumley, was joined on the civic front by Chairman of Essex County Council Cllr John Aldridge, of Writtle, as well as relatives of one of the interviewees featured on the bench.

# The Essex Sound and Video Archive at the Essex Record Office has received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to run our project, You Are Hear: sound and a sense of place.

The project will digitise and catalogue some of the audio and video recordings held in the Archive, and then help people learn about them, engage with them, and enjoy them.

Over the next three years, we will be taking our recordings into every corner of Essex, helping people develop their sense of place by increasing their appreciation for the sounds of the county, past and present.
