Another humiliation for Priti Patel – how many more can we take? Amnesty now!

Hello and thanks for tuning in, today we take another look at our very on Home Secretary Priti Patel, who has been forced into making a humiliating U-turn in relation to migrant evictions and deportations.
Last month the Home Office announced controversial plans to restart evicting asylum seekers from Home Office accommodation after an amnesty during the pandemic. Asylum seekers can be provided accommodation by the Home Office in some cases, but plans had been made to start evicting people who’s asylum claims had been rejected.
The amnesty was brought in in response to the pandemic, where evicting people was, quite rightly, deemed to be too dangerous. That amnesty lasted for over a year, but the Home Office decided that they had had enough of being lenient, and pressed ahead with plans to chuck people out into the streets.
The plans were met with fierce criticism, in particular by Public Health England. PHE pointed out that evicting people could increase the spread of covid, and they also pointed out that the measures disproportionately affected people of colour.

The policy was challenged in the courts by four asylum seekers, and on Tuesday this week the Home Office agreed to drop the policy after being criticized by the judge.

A Home Office official had written in a witness statement that they had not considered whether they had the power to enact the proposed changes, a stunning admission by the Home Office that they had been flaunting the rules. The court critised these comments and adjourned the case for the Home office to clarify their position.

In the face of this criticism and mounting pressure from elsewhere, the Home Office scrapped the policy and the legal challenge was dropped.

The policy would have affected around 4000 people who may have found themselves homeless, and the dropping of the policy is a humiliating u-turn for Priti Patel’s Home Office.

This is another example of Priti Patel and the Home Office’s blatant contempt for migrants and asylum seekers in the UK. They were perfectly content to throw asylum seekers out onto the streets, when all the while covid continues to be a serious problem here in the UK.

In this case it was lucky that the policy was challenged and the Home Office dropped it, but you can be sure that there will be further ploys by Priti Patel to get rid of as many people as she can.
