MODERN SLAVERY ACT UNDER THREAT FROM PRITI PATEL

Priti Patel may drastically alter the modern slavery laws that the Conservative Party created
Priti Patel’s crusade against refugees and migrants continues with news that she may be rewriting, or even scrapping, the Modern Slavery Act.
The Home Secretary is appointing a review of the Modern Slavery Act to prevent lawyers using it to prevent people being removed from the UK.
The Modern Slavery Act, whilst not perfect, is one of the few pieces of legislation the Conversative Party should be proud of.

It was championed by Priti Patel’s predecessor as Home Secretary, Theresa May.
One of the provisions in it allows for those who are found to be victims of modern slavery to be granted a year’s leave to remain.

Whilst modern slavery claims are being processed, deportations and removals should not take place.
This is clearly not attractive to the current Home Secretary, who wants to remove as many people as possible, and as quickly as possible.

We have seen in the last few days the lengths to which Priti Patel will go to remove people from the UK and send them as far away as possible.
Priti Patel is said to be furious at the way in which the Modern Slavery Act is being used, and wants to see change.
The Home Office has not denied claims that the Act could be reviewed, saying only that

“we are always looking at how our world leading modern slavery reforms are supporting those who need it most and ensuring vulnerable people are not being exploited”.
Read into that what you will. It does seem a bit of a coincidence that the Rwanda fiasco is happening at the same time as rumours that the Modern Slavery Act could be drastically altered.
