The deadline is quickly approaching to get your REAL ID

If you plan to fly somewhere for spring break or a graduation next year, you’ll need more than a standard driver’s license to get on the plane.

REAL ID enforcement will start on May 7, 2025.

The federal government delayed it by two years, giving residents more time to get ID cards that comply with the security requirements.

The Washington State Department of Licensing also saw several effects from the COVID-19 pandemic. Fewer people came in to renew their licenses, and staff numbers declined, which caused a significant backlog in applications.

Federal agencies, including TSA, will still accept state ID cards and other forms of identification that don't comply with REAL ID until May 7, 2025.
