American Century - Steel Giant Stomps into Duluth
Here is the American Century arriving in Duluth, Minnesota just after sunset on the evening of June 4, 2023. She was scheduled to load taconite pellets at the Canadian National dock in West Duluth. Even though the ore dock was currently occupied by the Algoma Transport, the Century came in early to pick up fuel at the Cenovus dock. It would end up being a long 19-hour wait before the Century finally got to load taconite and nearly two more days before the Century 'left fully loaded for Cleveland."
The arrival of the 1000-footers is always impressive when they come in light and fast, sitting high above the water... forming an imposing wall of steel. And even though the crowds had started to lighten after a long and busy day of shipping action, the Century still entertained us by exchanging salutes with the Aerial Lift Bridge. After passing under the bridge, she slid around nicely to get her bow pointed towards the fuel dock... while the bridge settled back down to let cars and pedestrians continue on their way.
It would only be another 30 minutes before another giant, the Century's fleet-mate the Indiana Harbor, made her return to Duluth after cleaning out her cargo hold. (Her departure from Duluth four hours earlier was previously covered on this channel.) Stay tuned for that repeat arrival in an upcoming video here!
The 1000-foot American Century was launched under the name Columbia Star in November 1980, making her the twelfth of thirteen 1000-footers built for Great Lakes trade. She originally sailed for Oglebay Norton. In June 2006, she was sold to American Steamship Company and obtained her current name at that time. She is powered with four V-20 cylinder 3,560 horsepower G.M. diesel engines and has a cargo capacity of 78,850 tons at her maximum mid-summer draft of 34 feet. Cargo is stored in seven holds that are accessed by 34 hatches on deck. Her 260-foot self-unloading boom can discharge up to 10,000 tons per hour.
