A 24-hour Dash to Malacca, Malaysia :: WEEK 13

We really wanted to visit the multi-cultural city of Malacca, Malaysia. It is positioned on an old trading route and was subject to tumultuous times at the hands of several nations:

It was originally settled by the Malay as a fishing village. Then Parameswara established a sultanate there on the Malacca River.

In 1511, the Portuguese came a'conquering and abolished the sultanate. They hoped to control Asian trading routes. They didn't; they only made trade in the region more complicated.

A hundred thirty years later, the Dutch defeated the Portuguese and made Malacca their own.

A hundred eighty years later, the Dutch ceded Malacca to the British.

The British, for another hundred thirty years, ruled the region. In 1956, the first Prime Minister of Malaysia declared independence.

Following 450 years of foreign rule, the government of Malacca finally returned to the Malay. Wow!

Consequently, Malaka is a wonderful mash-up of European and Malay cultures, languages, architecture, and history.

We strolled around, and we saw St. Paul Church, the oldest church in SE Asia, A Famosa, and the Dutch Cemetary.

As a globetrotting family, we have discovered that traveling with kids helps the children enjoy actively witnessing history in the world more than trying to absorb it from a book in a classroom.

We shot this footage on an iPhone X. The vlog was created and edited in iMovie and Canva. TubeBuddy was used for technical YouTube guidance.
