There's a lot of mistakes being made when it comes to bulking and cutting.
One big reason for this is that the whole topic is very vaguely defined.
As well as a difference in opinion among coaches about the duration of each phase and what to do.
Having said that, there's is one mistake that stands out. A mistake I see A LOT of experienced lifters make.
And that mistake is, being stuck in either permacutting or permabulking.
First off, let's define the terms.
My definition of permacutting is trying to be in a calorie deficit for too long without having a specific deadline or goal when it's going to end.
Notice I've used the word "trying" there. And the reason I used "trying" is because guys are in and out of the calorie deficit all the time.
The stick to it for a few weeks, end up binging for a week and the back at it. And this can go on for months and even years in some cases.
What's happening here in a lot of cases is the good old Parkinson's Law. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkinson%27s_law
"The amount of time which one has to perform a task is the amount of time it will take to complete the task."
In a nutshell, because you didn't set any deadlines for when the "cut" is supposed to end there's no sense of urgency to stick to it.
You can always start from tomorrow, there's always the next day.
Of course you want to have the flexibility to "restart" the diet but if you don't commit to the goal there's a very low chance you'll get there.
And the major issue with permacutting is that you're spending all this time without maximizing muscle growth.
To maximize muscle and strength gains the body needy fuel (calories).
Another big problem is becoming too diet obsessed. When you're "cutting" for a whole year your life is becoming centered around food and nutrition.
This nutrition obsession is steering you away from athletic goals, you forget why you're lifting weights in the first place. (To get stronger, to improve your athletic ability)
Of course the goal of looking great can be your priority but I see it way too often become the only goal.
And now let's talk permabulking.
Guys get stuck in this because they run away from the fact that eventually they'll have to lose all the body fat they've gained.
Permabulking is very comfortable. You're lifting weights, you're eating a lot of food, there's no pressure to manage your nutrition.
And it's very easy to get stuck in this phase. It's basically sweeping the problem under the carpet and hoping it doesn't re-appear.
The issue with permabulking is that the increased body fat is starting to limit how much muscle mass you can gain.
You're hitting diminishing returns, and after a while, you start gaining a lot more body fat than muscle mass.
The good thing about this is that losing fat is a relatively fast process compared to gaining muscle.
As a natural lifter I generally recommend spending 60-70% of time "lean" gaining and about 30-40% of time cutting.
Over the years you'll be spending less time dieting and more time building muscle as you get very good at managing your self and your nutrition.
Keep in mind that your first diet might take a bit longer before you get a hang of it.
