Elena Bekman-Shcherbina plays Mendelssohn Piano Concerto no. 1

Eelena Bekman-Shcherbina playing Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto no. 1, op. 25, with the All-Union Radio SO under Sergei Gorchakov, recorded before 1951. This is ripped from a LP. Bekman-Shcherbina's list of teachers is amazing -- she studied with Nikolai Zverev, Pavel Pabst and Vasily Safonov, and learned to play Scriabin's pieces from the composer himself. For her graduation from the Moscow Conservatory she played all of Bach's WTK. She was also the first pianist to play Debussy and Ravel in Russia. From 1924 she became a soloist for the All-Union Radio, broadcasting about 700 works. The photo shows Safonov with his students (l-r) Rosina Lhevinne, Alexander Goedicke, Yelena Bekman-Shcherbina, Olimpiada Kartasheva and Aglaida Fridman. On a side note, Bekman-Shcherbina and her husband Leonid Bekman composed the famous children's song, 'The Forest Raised a Christmas Tree' (В лесу родилась ёлочка)
