Tatiana Ryumina plays Liszt Tarantella
Tatiana Ryumina playing Liszt's Tarantella from Venezia e Napoli. This was recorded in the early 1980s. After I corrected the pitch on Tatiana Ryumina's extraordinary Schumann Kreisleriana, I contacted the museum of the Central Music School in Moscow to try to learn more about her. They were extremely gracious in providing three rare photos and adding to the little information that's available. I've put their links at the bottom.
Tatiana Ryumina (b. 20 January 1950) is the daughter of Rosa Ryumina, a piano teacher in Moscow (she taught Alla Pugacheva), and the elder sister of Marina Ryumina, also a pianist. Tatiana studied with Tamara Bobovich at the Central Music School until 1965. She then studied with Yakov Flier at the Moscow Conservatory, graduating in 1973. In 1969, she won second prize at the Schumann Competition in Zwickau. She made it to the finals of the 1974 Tchaikovsky Competition but did not win a prize. The LP released in 1976 was recorded at that competition.
The first photo shows Tatiana at the awards ceremony of the '69 Schumann Competition. Next to her is Dezso Ranki who won first prize. The second photo shows Tamara Bobovich's class in 1957, with Tatiana standing directly behind the pianist -- right in front of Bobovich. The third photo is the one used for the LP. It was printed on her booklet for the '74 Tchaikovsky Competition, which shows her repertoire in all three rounds.
It is not clear what happened to her after 1974. In one Russian blog post, someone who knew her said that an accident of some sort ended her career soon after the competition. If anyone has more information or more recordings, please contact me. I find her incredibly special.
