Imre Ungar plays 3 Chopin Mazurkas, op. 56 and op. 63

Imre Ungár playing Chopin's Mazurkas op. 56 no. 3 and op. 63 no. 2 and no. 3, recorded in 1958. Blind since the age of 3, Ungar (1909-1972) studied with Istvan Thoman, a student of Liszt. He took part in the 1932 Chopin competition and at the end was on level points with Alexander Uninsky. Rules at the time stated that drawn lots would be used in the case of a tie. The story goes that Uninsky won on a coin toss, with Imre Ungar given second*. Timing below:

00:00 - mazurka op. 56 no. 3
06:02 - mazurka op. 63 no. 2
07:58 - mazurka op. 63 no. 3

*There is another version of this story provided in a fascinating history of the Chopin competition. It states that Ungar's own protest led to the drawing of lots, which he ended up losing.
