Anhalter Bunker, a shelter from the bombs

Historic Berlin. www.historicberlin.com

The Anhalter Air Raid Bunker is one of the most remarkable Second World War shelters to survive to conflict almost intact.

It was built in 1943 over a period ten months directly opposite the main Anhalter Railway Station.

The huge outer walls measured between 2.13 and 4.5 metres thick and were made from reinforced concrete with steel rods running in three dimensions giving them extra strength.

During the war they managed to withstand many bomb hits and remain in remarkably good condition today.

The bunker consists of five floors, two underground and three above ground level. Altogether it measures 3,600 square metres – almost half the size of a FIFA football stadium.
