The former home of Radio Berlin International (RBI) - the international broadcaster for the German Democratic Republic (East Germany).

Now this vast complex is on Nalepastrasse on the banks of the river Spree. It also housed East German domestic radio Stimme Der DDR – and is falling down, virtually derelict. Historic Berlin took these photos in May 2015.

BACKGROUND

Radio Berlin International (RBI) started in May 1959 to counter Deutsche Welle, the West German international broadcaster.[1] Much of its output was news reports and information about the GDR. It offered a state-sponsored view on life in a socialist country. It distributed large quantities of colorful and professionally produced publicity material about life in the GDR to its listeners.

Stimme der DDR studios. DDR Radio war ein Hörfunkprogramm des Rundfunks der DDR, das auch für deutschsprachige Hörer außerhalb der Grenzen der DDR gedacht war. Es war, wie alle DDR-Sender, ein Instrument der Staatspartei SED, hatte einen hohen Wortanteil und bot politische Informationen, Unterhaltung und Kultur. Bis 1971 und ab 1990 hieß die Stimme der DDR Deutschlandsender.
