Alphons Diepenbrock - Jesu Dulcis Memoria
- Composer: Alphonsus Johannes Maria Diepenbrock (2 september 1862 -- 5 april 1921)
- Performers: Robbert Overpelt (tenor), Bernard Bartelink (organ)
- Year of recording: 1996
Jesu Dulcis Memoria, for Baritone and Organ, written in 1889.
One movement: Andante sostenuto e con moto
The text of the "Jesu Dulcis Memoria" is addressed directly to Jesus. The melodies which Diepenbrock used in this prayer can be called simple and direct (it is largely syllabic, and the curves and rhythm naturally follow the prosody of Latin), on the other hand it is characterized by refinement with regard to interval structure, themes, chromatic nuances so characteristic of the time in which it was composed, and climax building. The harmonic flexibility of the organ accompaniment, which almost always consists of four voices, is closely linked to all these aspects.
The character of Jesu Dulcis Memoria develops from understated meditative to ecstatic. It was first performed on 13 April 1890 during a Praise in the Moses-and-Aaron Church, Amsterdam, sung by the tenor P. van Erven Doorns, to whom the piece is dedicated.
