Sonata for Violin & Piano, Op. 34, written in 1910.

00:00 - I. Moderato
08:45 - II. Adagio molto
14:30 - III. Allegro con anima

Among the best works of Dutch composer Schlegel is the Violin Sonata Op. 34 from 1910. It was published by Siegel in Leipzig and dedicated to the poet and critic Max Kalbeck, who was a great admirer of Schlegel. In Vienna, Kalbeck organized several concerts dedicated solely to the music of the 'Haarlem Brahms'.

The piano part here is a marvel of harmonic skill and invention, nevertheless staying largely within the boundaries of tonality; the violin part is lyrical and expressive. Within the conventional scheme of contrasts in dynamics and tempo (Moderato - Adagio molto - Allegro con anima) Schlegel creates a tension curve that keeps the listener enthralled from beginning to the end. The sonata was first performed by violinist Christiaan Timmner (leader of the Concertgebouw Orchestra) and pianist Willem Andriessen. It was not long before Carl Flesch and Arthur Schnabel made it part of their repertoire.

The sonata is dedicated: "Herrn Max Kalbeck gewidmet".
