Geistliches Lied No. 5 (Wenn Ich Ihn nur habe), For Soprano and Organ, written in 1898.

In one movement, marked Andante con moto.

The Lieder "Wenn ich ihn nur habe" and "Wenige wissen das Geheimnis der Liebe" that Diepenbrock composed in the last months of 1898, can be seen as religious works, although this time they are not texts that belong in a liturgical or ecclesial context. Diepenbrock's inspiration were two of the 'Geistliche Lieder' from Novalis (1772-1801), for him one of the greatest and most profound representatives of Christian civilization, "the wisest of all", as he once characterized him. In this poet he found "strange flowers of mystical ecstasy and clairvoyance". In many of his verses Diepenbrock felt so addressed that he called Novalis his "spiritual brother".

From the Geistliche Lieder a different kind of religiosity comes forward, than from the texts that Diepenbrock had put earlier into music. Often there is a fusion of erotic feelings and mysticism. The hunger and thirst for human love is in "Wenige wissen..." associated with the consumption of bread and wine at the Last Supper. The compositions that Diepenbrock made on these texts, are like a hymnal rapture, in a typical late-romantic fashion. He orchestrated both works later on in his life.

The piece is dedicated to: "Aaltje Noordewier-Reddingius".
