00:00 - I. Und es waren Hirten auf dem Felde
07:47 - II. Und siehe! Diesen erschien ein Engel des Herrn
11:49 - III. Und es kamen die Weisen vom Morgenlande
18:20 - IV. "Ich verkündige Euch eine grosse Freude"
Jan Willem Frans Brandts Buys was born as the son of a family of musicians in Zutphen, the Netherlands. Already at age 13, he was offered an appointment as organist, and he soon began his first attempts at composition. He studied music in Frankfurt and Vienna, was acquainted with such prominent musicians as Rubinstein, Grieg and Brahms and finally settled in Salzburg, where he died in 1933. Many of his works, particularly his sanguine Spielopers [opera plays], were highly acclaimed during his lifetime but later fell into oblivion.
The Christmas Quintet, originally written for flute and string quartet, quite arguably deserves readmission into the repertoire by the flute world! The piece bears great resemblance to the exceedingly romantic world of Berlioz and Schubert. Each movement, bearing a quotation from the Biblical Christmas story at the top, quickly leads out of the colorful, vividly painted initial feeling of the respective “motto” and into an agitated reworking of the motive. In the third movement, which tells of the wise kings from the east, the continual reemergence of a meditative turn of phrase floating above the choral theme gives the listener a sense of its kinship, both religiously and musically, to Anton Bruckner. The glorious colors of this well-composed and uplifting chamber work, should allow this piece a place in the great classical flute music repertoire.
