"The Tailors from Schönau" is a comic opera in three acts by Jan Brandts Buys. The libretto was written by Bruno Warden and Ignaz Michael Welleminsky. The premiere was on 1 April 1916 in the Dresden Court Opera {Semperoper} with Richard Tauber as Florian. The opera gave the composer an big international success, and is the most successful opera by a Dutch composer to date. The work belongs to the late romantic period.

Synopsis: The opera is set in Liebenzell, a small town in the Swabian part of the Black Forest [Germany], around 1830.

The still young and pretty Veronika Schwälble decides that she has mourned for her dead husband long enough, and should marry again. The 3 candidates, Kaspar Wiegele, Melchior Biegele and Balthasar Ziegele, all reputable tailors from Schönau, try to court her. However, Veronika is unable to choose which tailor she wants to marry. The lively journeyman Florian, who is secretly in love with her, proposes that she should hold a contest: The tailor who can make him a tailored suit the fastest, will be the victor. However, the contest is inconclusive, because all three tailors finish their work simultaneously. Now another criterion must decide who will win the contest: Which suit will fit him the best? They try all three suits on Florian, and all fit equally well. The contest ends in a draw. Meanwhile, Veronika has come to realise that she wants only one person to be her husband, namely Florian. To trick the tailors of Schönau, she suggests that they should play the game Blindekuh [Blind cow] together. Enthusiastically, the tailors participate in the game; but while they struggle in vain, the two lovers get married by the mayor Christian Folz. When the Schneider notice that they have been tricked, they get angry. However, mayor Folz manages to calm them down by arranging a special wedding format for them...
