How to Start up an A-10 Thunderbolt II

Starting an A-10 isn’t as simple as turning a key in the ignition and stepping on the gas. If you’re an A-10 pilot, here’s what you’ll need to do to get up in the air.
First, the grounds crew will inspect the aircraft’s exterior to see if anything is loose or malfunctioning. Afterward, the pilot must inspect the cockpit, to see if the canopy and ejection seat are secured, the survival kit is available, if the radio beacon is working, and that all four duct shrouds are clear.
If these check out, it’s time to start the engines. If the left engine starts first, the pilot will have access to normal brakes. However, if the right engine starts first, the pilot must pull the emergency brake handle. Pilots must monitor the engine rpm before takeoff and ensure all signals are normal. The Engine Operate Switch must also show normal before taxiing.
These procedures may sound tedious, but with each A-10 costing about $18 million and with the lives of highly-trained pilots at stake, it makes sense to ensure everything is in working order!
