Why Forward Operating Bases Suck to Live In

One of the toughest places to live and work as a soldier is in an Army Forward Operating Base or FOB.

An FOB is an operational-level military position used to launch and support strategic and tactical operations in a conflict. Because of their positioning, most FOBs are sparse and notoriously unpleasant to live on.

On the most basic level, an FOB consists of a barbed-wire fence with a fortified entry control point or ECB; more substantial FOBs also utilize systems like concrete barriers, berms, gates, watchtowers, and other target hardening systems. Depending on size and location, an FOB may or may not contain an airfield, hospital, machine shop, and other facilities.

Life on an FOB is little more than work and sleep: soldiers work long, stressful hours with little to no leisure time. Even amenities such as a so-called Morale and Welfare Tent where soldiers can use a phone and internet or pick up personal items like razor blades and soap– are considered a luxury in forward bases.
