Peggy Gaines Walker on Meeting Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin
In January, Peggy Gaines Walker visited the Museum to celebrate the launch of “Night Train to Nashville: Music City Rhythm & Blues 1945–1970,” an online version of the Museum’s award-winning exhibition.
A Nashville native and regular performer on "Night Train," one of the city's two syndicated R&B TV shows during this period, Gaines Walker sat down with the Museum's Michael Gray to discuss her musical accomplishments. In this clip, she recounts meeting Aretha Franklin and performs Franklin's hit "Chain of Fools."
For more on the influential musicians who played important roles in shaping Nashville’s pioneering R&B scene, check out “Night Train to Nashville: Music City Rhythm & Blues 1945–1970,” made possible by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The program you see here was presented in partnership with the National Museum of African American Music.
