5. Sam Fisher - Splinter Cell: Conviction

It took five Splinter Cell titles to turn Sam Fisher into an old badass and there’s no turning back now. Sam Fisher has never been a more interesting character than in Splinter Cell: Conviction. His daughter is dead, he’s extremely pissed, and it’s time to see if he can get his revenge on everyone whose wronged him. We bet on him succeeding.

4. Max Payne - Max Payne 3

Max Payne is also no stranger to misery in Max Payne 3. The years of drinking and popping pills have made him more world-weary and cynical than ever before. But he can still pump rounds into paramilitary faces and that's really all that matters . Besides this older version of Max delivers every line with the just the right amount of self loathing.

3. Joel - The Last of Us

Without going into spoilers it's safe to say that Joel has also seen his fair share of sadness in The Last of Us. Boy does it suck to grow old in gaming… Anyway, he has become a ruthless grizzled man in his late forties that will do anything to protect young Ellie in a world full of fungal zombies. He's the ass kicking father figure we all wish we had.

2. Ezio Auditore da Firenze - Assassin's Creed: Revelations

Ezio is the first old guy on this list that's actually happy. Like a renaissance George Clooney the years have made him even more charming to the ladies in Assassin's Creed: Revelations. And after three games, this aging assassin has nothing left to prove as he gets stuff done and still gets the girl in the end. Ezio might be old but he's still our favourite assassin in the entire series.

1. Old Snake - Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

It wasn‘t until Metal Gear Solid 4 that Solid Snake’s glorious mullet turned gray and he grew a moustache that would make even Burt Reynold’s jealous. But MGS 4 was also when Solid Snake matured into being the ultimate badass. Old Snake goes through some unbelievable abuse trying to save the world with his rapidly aging body failing him all the time. But he never ever complains about it and that alone makes him our number one old dude in gaming.
