Beyond Two Souls preview - Heavy Rain meets Paranormal Activity

We recently had the chance to play the first few hours of Beyond: Two Souls. This new game by Heavy Rain creator David Cage tells the story of Jodie Holmes, a girl with psychic powers.

The first thing we noticed is that the game looks absolutely amazing. The subtle complexity of skin textures are probably the best we've ever seen. Although there are black borders on the screen that make the picture smaller.

The story jumps around frequently, giving you sneak peeks into both the past and present day. You play as a young Jodie just discovering her powers .... all the way up to her joining the CIA as a psychic special agent and the events that follow that. It's really easy to start caring about Jodie as she is played very convincingly by actress Ellen Page.

Unlike Heavy Rain you don't switch between multiple characters in Beyond: Two Souls. You only control Jodie and the supernatural force she calls Aiden. You can switch to him at almost any time to assist Jodie's progress. Playing as this supernatural being is a little awkward to get the hang of thanks to the Descent like first person flying controls. But it is really fun to mess with people and stuff in an environment. It's a lot like being the ghost in Paranormal Activity. And like these movies things get out of hand pretty fast.

Beyond: Two Souls has a lot of action scenes and these can be a little more problematic. Like the rest of the game, they're mostly reliant on quicktime events, which means either flicking the right stick or tapping a button at the right moment. Failing a quicktime event won't mess up the game, but such scenes feel less exciting and more stressful. We liked the game the most during it's more quiet moments.

Beyond: Two Souls is a very ambitious game with some really interesting story telling and gameplay mechanics. The presence of Aiden certainly sets this game apart from Heaven Rain. But we have to play the entire story to see whether or not that's a good thing.
