Five good reasons why - We hate misleading trailers

A good video game trailer is supposed to get you hyped for a game. But then the game comes out and it doesn't look anything like the trailer. It's something that happens all the time and we think it's bullshit. Here are five good reasons why we hate misleading trailers.

1. The trailer is impressive instead of the gameplay

The Old Republic had some very fancy computer animated trailers with great choreography. But the actual gameplay was typical MMO style 'stand in front of an enemy and hit hotkeys till it dies fare. A lot of games are guilty of this, and it's something that really bugs us. Make the gameplay impressive, not the trailer.

2. The trailer doesn't reflect the tone of the game

The Dead Island trailer got us all emotional and hyped. This was clearly going to be a zombie game that was all about feels. And then the game came out and our dreams quickly got crushed. Dead Island is a game about whacking zombies in the head with a poisoned baseball bat. Nothing wrong with that, but make sure the tone of the trailer reflects the tone of the game. And we are also looking at you Gears...

3. The trailer shows fake gameplay

Trying to make a CG trailer look like gameplay is one of the worst things a developer can do. Take a look at this Motorstorm trailer Sony got us all hyped with at the E3 in 2005. And now look at the actual gameplay ... Bummer right. They tried to do the same with Killzone 2 and it blew up in their face. How stupid do they think we are?

4. The trailer tries to market it as a different game

A lot of gamers thought Brutal Legend was all about Jack Black kicking lots of demon ass. And who can blame them? All the trailers and even the demo made it seem like a third person action-adventure game. Imagine their surprise when they find out that the majority of the gameplay consisted of mediocre real time strategy action. It's so uncool to release trailers that try to hide the actual genre of a game.

5. False expectations hurt everybody

Nobody benefits from false advertising. Sure the publisher could potentially make some extra money with a misleading trailer but scorned gamers will never buy a game from them again. And the game actual game will be trashed by reviewers for not living up to the unrealistic hype set by the trailer. So game studios and publisher have some consideration when you make a trailer for your game. Yes we like hyped about games but not if it's based on lies and deceit.
