TESTING WIND TURBINE MECHANICAL AND GEAR RATIOS

n this video we are testing the chain drive gear ratio and motor connections using a variable frequency drive system. This turbine will be grid tied and uses the frequency drive to produce electricity via regenerative rotational speed. It will be capable of generating electricity with rotational speeds as slow as 12 rpm on the blades. It has 6 blades to accomplish slower rotational speed control and lower sound levels. Usually anything over 3 blades is considered a waste of blades and cost prohibitive. But we manufactured the blades for this system ourselves using 6 foot long 2 x 6 pine coated with fiberglass resin and sand finished to a 1000 grit satin shine surface. The brackets on the front of the 3 foot diameter rotor are used to hold the blades at a 15 degree pitch to the perpendicular rotor surface.
