Woodturning - Open Segmented Bowl

Woodturning open segmented bowl of floating rectangles using bow ties. This video looks at how to turn open segmented bowls using scrap wood.

It is an unusual approach to construction of an open segment bowl where the bow ties or butterfy joints are used to suspend or float the segments from the base. It makes woodturning this piece on the lathe a little more challenging. Certainly not helped by turning the vase a little too thin!

The video provides a guide of how to construct the piece and woodturning in order to achieve the open segment effect once finished. It should be possible to follow this method with scraps of wood or small pieces of exotic wood that are not normally found as large blocks. Plus it gives you control over the geometry of the pieces, where you no longer have to use quadrilateral wedges, but can have more exotic shapes.
Stay tuned for more attempts in this series!
