While it may seem tempting to duck behind the nearest tree or bush if you need to use the toilet when you’re enjoying the great outdoors, it can pose hygiene, environmental and even legal risks.

Queensland’s Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) has warned against bush toileting across the state’s national parks, claiming the problem is becoming a “more common occurrence”.

In national parks, if you do not use a portable toilet, you must bury human waste properly. Failing to do so can result in a $333 fine.

There is also a $333 fine for burying or leaving human waste within 10 metres of waterways - such as lakes, rivers and creeks - walking tracks, campsites, or visitor facilities.

DETSI said, “When you’re heading out for a long walk or hike, please don’t just drop your [waste] anywhere - we know when you gotta go, you gotta go - pop a few extra bags and a small shovel in your pack to help keep our parks clean for all visitors.”

While human waste might seem harmless, in natural environments it can disrupt delicate ecosystems. Even minor contamination can have a disproportionate impact on plants and wildlife.

Animals can be exposed to bacteria, parasites and viruses that don’t naturally occur in their environment. And in heavily visited areas, repeated waste can alter animal behaviour, attract species to human activity, or contaminate food sources.
