Aussies reminded to be croc-safe after surprising discovery | #yahoonewsau

While crocodile encounters aren’t unusual in Queensland’s Far North, it’s important to know how to stay safe.
Cairns Regional Councillor Brett Moller said he found it “most concerning” to hear that a young crocodile was sighted in the city’s south, and believes it highlights the fact that animals are increasingly being detected in “suburbia”.
Moller went on to criticise the Queensland Crocodile Management Plan, arguing that it places too much emphasis on crocodile protection rather than community safety.
However, crocs are a protected and ecologically important species, playing a key role as apex predators in maintaining healthy wetland ecosystems.
Environmentalist Bob Irwin previously told Yahoo News, “The crocodiles are doing exactly what they did millions of years ago, and they will continue to do it. What has changed is people’s attitude. Crocodiles and people can coexist easily without a problem, provided that people do the right thing and act responsibly.”
To stay croc-safe, assume all waterways in crocodile habitat may contain crocodiles, and maintain a safe distance from the water’s edge at all times.
If a crocodile is sighted, leave the area immediately and report it to authorities, rather than attempting to monitor or approach it.
