This project builds on earlier attempts at the beginning of the century to drill near one of the Krafla magma chambers. Back then, the goal was to explore geothermal energy options by getting close to the chamber. However, the chamber wasn't as deep as expected, leading to an accidental breakthrough into the magma vault. This mishap halted further drilling attempts because the intense heat of around 842 degrees Fahrenheit from the magma destroyed the well. Nevertheless, it confirmed that drilling into a magma chamber doesn't trigger a volcano eruption.

Now, scientists are giving it another shot. Magma chambers are notoriously tricky to locate, making the Krafla site a unique opportunity to access one. This opens the door for experiments that were previously impossible.
