Personal Tragedy in the War of 1812: An Account by George Robert Gleig

When studying military history, it is all too easy for us to become enamored with tales of gallantry and heroism. To imagine the glory of an era long past, whose sufferings and privations are well beyond our own experiences, is an easy thing to do. But no matter what the time period, no matter how the battles were fought or the reasons why, warfare- as organized killing- represents a most destitute state of humanity and a tragedy for all those who take part.

Please note the imagine I used in this video's thumbnail does NOT show the account being read, for which there are no paintings or images. I chose it for its thematic appropriateness, and not out of respect to the rank or appearance of the men being discussed in this account.
