Band of the Corps of Royal Engineers: Beating Retreat at Battle Abbey, 950th Anniversary of Hastings

On the cold and cloudy evening of October 14th 2016, the town of Battle was treated to the music of the Corps of Royal Engineers for a Beating of the Retreat. The occasion was the 950th Anniversary of the Battle of Hastings, fought on the site of Battle Abbey in 1066. There was a flag-lowering ceremony which saw representatives from local towns and Normandy witness the lowering of the British and French banners, to the sounds of God Save the Queen and La Marseilles. Local church services also honoured the dead, both Saxon and Norman.

The weekend also saw a massive reenactment of the battle, with reenactors from across the country, continent, and world take to the field. Not to worry- plenty of videos featuring that are on the way! -
