Growing Up in the Cold War: A 9th Grader's 'Autobiography' from 1947

"Baby Bruce: A New Classified Novel, From Ancient Times to the Present Day"
That's the rather melodramatic title for Bruce Alan's 9th grade English Assignment. Like any teenage boy from Smalltown Pennsylvania, he wrote about fishing, swimming, and getting into fights at school! But not all of Baby Bruce's thoughts were quite so childish- because unlike his parents generation, he was growing up at the dawning of the Atomic Age...

The story of Baby Bruce is far more than just an interesting account of a young person's life during the mid-20th Century and the Cold War. It's a wonderful way to show the value of local and family history. When it was shown to be on a whim, as a conversation piece, I never expected to find such insightful, beautiful, and haunting language within! It just goes to show that historical discovery can be found in the most curious of places. And just because it isn't some grand, formal history of great people doing great things...doesn't mean it can't be immensely important to study and understand. After all, nothing happens in a vacuum, and all history is "local" to someone!
