How to copy a project in Project for the web with the Copy Button
COPY A PROJECT IN MICROSOFT PROJECT FOR THE WEB WITH THE ‘COPY’ BUTTON
Did you know that you can easily copy a project in Project for the web to create a new one, or to use it as a template?
Project for the web is Microsoft’s latest project planning and execution system. It’s intended to be easy to use and a new way to plan and run a project.
Let’s say you created a project in Project for the web and the project went really well, and you simply want to reuse that schedule to accelerate planning for another project. Or maybe you want to use the successful project as a model or template for future projects. How do you do that?
There are two methods to copy a project. One is to Copy & Paste. We have another video about that on our YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/91JKdyr0JX0.
The new project copy method is to use the Copy Button:
1) Open the project you want to copy in Project for the web. Click on the project name on the left side of the screen and this will open a menu on the right side of the screen. On that menu, you will see a pull-down menu where you can select to delete or copy the project. DON’T delete the project. Select Copy.
2) Project for the web creates a new project, and you can now give the project a name. If you’re going to use this project as a template, you might want to add a prefix to the project name, like “Template”. You’ll see that all the assignments and progress have been removed from the copied project.
3) The final step is to clean up the project. Adjust duration and effort, and you’re ready to go.
Now you have a choice of ways to copy your project – either using the copy & paste method or the new Copy button. Both methods remove assignments and may affect duration and effort. The copy & paste method preserves your progress, and might be suitable for a point-in-time baseline comparison. The Copy button removes progress too, and is suitable for creating templates.
