The Carpenters - All I Can Do (The Spectrum Demo Version) [1967]
Music: Richard Carpenter
Lyrics: John Bettis
Produced and Arranged by: Richard Carpenter
Drums and Vocals: Karen Carpenter
Electric Piano and Vocals: Richard Carpenter
Guitar and Vocals: John Bettis and Gary Sims
Bass and Vocals: Danny Woodhams:
Vocals: Leslie Johnston
Richard's Notes:
Not able to afford any more studio time, the group, now called "Spectrum" and numbering six - found itself several months later in the Carpenter home for the recording of the next 'demo' tape. This was accomplished utilizing Karen's and my portable two track Sony 200. Accompaniment was recorded in the living room on one track. We then played this back in the bathroom and recorded our vocals on the remaining track, in a futile attempt at some echo. Originally written as an instrumental in five-four time, "All I Can Do" is one of the first of my songs to which John supplied lyrics. This recording is a transfer of the original tape, and after twenty-four years, the echo has finally been supplied.
LYRICS:
Ooh, ooh, ba
Yesterday I thought you'd stay
I thought you'd see things my way
But now I see my hopes may be dead
I should have known when you said
I was the one you wanted
Wanting meant nothing more than today
All I can do is cry over you
And hope you return someday
All I can do is cry over you
Ever since you've gone away
Every road that I follow
Leaves me with no tomorrow
I need someone to show me the way
Baba, baba, baba
Baba, baba, baba
