The Carpenters - The Parting of Our Ways [1966]

Written by: Richard Carpenter
Produced and Engineered by: Joe Osborn
Arranged by: Richard Carpenter
Keyboards: Richard Carpenter
Drums: Karen Carpenter
Bass: Joe Osborn

Richard Note: Joe Osborn was one of L.A.'s leading studio musicians throughout most of the 60s into the 70s. He and a partner formed Magic Lamp Record in 1966 with Joe acting as "A&R" (Artists & Repertoire) man and engineer and furnishing his garage studio for the recording. Karen, who had recently turned 16, was signed to Magic Lamp on May 13th of 1966. "The Parting Of Our Ways" was one of the first songs we recorded. As most of the Magic Lamp master tapes were lost in a fire that destroyed the Osborns' home in 1975, this recording is a transfer of a tired acetate reference disc.
Lyrics:
Where has it gone?
The love we shared?
The love I live for is no longer there
If God only planned it to last all our days
There never would have been a parting of our ways

Love was so bright, then you went away
My days were sunny; now they are gray
If God only planned it to last all our days
There never would have been a parting of our ways

I hope and pray that he'll return to me
Forever since he's been gone, I've been in misery
I hope someday he'll come up to my door,
Saying he's sorry he'll leave no more

My love is gone now; it didn't last
Who was my future now is my past
If God only planned it to last all our days
There never would have been,
Never would have been now,
Never would have been a parting of our ways
