THE RICHARD CARPENTER TRIO was formed in the summer of 1965 with high schooler Karen on drums and collegiate pal Wes Jacobs on bass and tuba. This Ellington standard was one of the first songs I chose to arrange for the trio. Recorded in our living room in the summer of 1965, this melodramatic treatment was deliberately intended to feature each musician, especially Karen, who had been playing the drums for only a matter of months.
