HOURS AGO! Elon Musk Just Tweeted Tesla Dojo Update With Attitude

Just several hours ago Elon Musk teased Tesla Dojo's Whitepaper as "more important than it may seem," after Tesla released a new whitepaper regarding a new standard for its Dojo supercomputing platform.

In the abstract of Tesla Dojo whitepaper, the automaker is describing a new standard to work with its computing platform:

“This standard specifies Tesla arithmetic formats and methods for the new 8-bit and 16-bit binary floating-point arithmetic in computer programming environments for deep learning neural network training. This standard also specifies exception conditions and the status flags thereof. An implementation of a floating-point system conforming to this standard may be realized entirely in software, entirely in hardware, or in any combination of software and hardware.”

As Pranay Pathole notes under Elon Musk's Dojo update, "Overtime Dojo will be able to predict with 99.99999% accuracy what a good driver would do given a set of input conditions. This will be a very revolutionary step in self-driving. Once Dojo becomes self-supervised accidents caused due to human error will drop down to basically 0."

Elon commented to Pathole's tweet and wrote "Reducing traffic fatalities by 90% seems likely, perhaps ultimately by over 99%."

Tesla’s Dojo white paper is incredibly technical, though it appears to suggest that the company has created a new way of representing numbers in computer programs that would then be useful for various scenarios, and is several times faster. As the Tesla online community discussed the white paper, Musk noted that the document is “more important than it may seem at first.”

As Electrek's Fred Lambert writes "I'm not going to lie, a lot of that stuff is going way over my head, and it’s certainly more digestible for people familiar with programming for deep learning."

Simon Alvarez from Teslarati notes that Musk’s predictions about Dojo’s potential may sound incredibly optimistic, but the CEO has a point. Tesla’s Autopilot and FSD programs are designed to be safety systems, even if they tend to make driving tasks incredibly convenient. Bolstered by Dojo’s capabilities, Tesla’s advanced driver-assist solutions might very well reach their full potential. Elon Musk, after all, has noted in the past that his goal would be to make Teslas so safe, the company’s vehicles would avoid even accidents that might be intentional.

“Worldwide, there are about a million people a year dying in car accidents. That’s a hell of a lot, and there are like 10 million people that get seriously injured. So it’s like, you know, we got to hustle on this,” Musk said during a one-on-one interview with automotive teardown expert Sandy Munro.
