HOUR AGO! Rivian CEO Announces Joining Tesla: "We’re excited to work with Tesla"

Just about an hour ago Rvian made a breaking announcement of joining Tesla and working with Tesla, accepting its charging standard.

Rivian Automotive, the American electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, recently made an exciting announcement that it is embracing the North American Charging Standard (NACS). This charging standard was originally developed and implemented by Rivian's rival, Tesla. By adopting NACS, Rivian joins a growing list of automakers that have recognized the importance of a unified charging infrastructure for electric vehicles.

Starting in 2025, Rivian will incorporate NACS charge ports as standard equipment on its R1 vehicles, and subsequently on its upcoming R2 platform. This move highlights Rivian's commitment to providing its customers with convenient access to a comprehensive charging network. The inclusion of NACS charge ports means that Rivian owners will be able to utilize Tesla's expansive Supercharger network, in addition to Rivian's own developing Rivian Adventure Network.

RJ Scaringe, the founder and CEO of Rivian, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership with Tesla and the broader implications for the advancement of carbon neutrality. Scaringe stated, "We're excited to work with Tesla and to see collaborations like this help advance the world toward carbon neutrality. The adoption of the North American Charging Standard will enable our existing and future customers to leverage Tesla's expansive Supercharger network while we continue to build out our Rivian Adventure Network. We look forward to continuing to find new ways to accelerate EV adoption."

While Rivian will provide access to Tesla's extensive charging network in North America, the company is also committed to expanding its own charging infrastructure, the Rivian Adventure Network. It is unclear whether the Rivian chargers will eventually support both NACS and the SAE Combo with CCS (Combined Charging System) standards. However, Rivian's decision to join forces with Tesla is undoubtedly a wise move, as it allows Rivian owners to benefit from the established Supercharger network, which currently boasts an extensive reach across the continent.

Nevertheless, some observers have raised concerns about the physical compatibility of Rivian's current charging plug with Tesla Superchargers. The positioning of the plug on Rivian vehicles may not align with Tesla's charging infrastructure, as the cable length may not reach the left side of the vehicle. This discrepancy could pose challenges for Rivian owners who wish to charge their vehicles using Tesla Superchargers.

Speculation has arisen about whether Rivian will address this issue by relocating the plug on its vehicles to align better with Tesla chargers. Alternatively, there may be the possibility of Rivian selling extender cables specifically designed for CCS-enabled cars, allowing them to connect to Tesla Superchargers more easily. As of now, it remains uncertain how Rivian plans to resolve this compatibility concern.

In embracing the North American Charging Standard developed by Tesla, Rivian has taken a significant step forward in supporting a unified charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. By offering access to Tesla's Supercharger network while simultaneously building its own charging network, Rivian is positioning itself as a leader in the electric vehicle market. As the adoption of electric vehicles continues to grow, collaborations like this between major automakers will undoubtedly contribute to the widespread acceptance and accelerated adoption of EVs, ultimately driving the world closer to a carbon-neutral future.
