Battles for Chattanooga, Part 5 | Ringgold Gap

After the Battle of Chickamauga, the Union Army of the Cumberland retreated back to Chattanooga and dug in. The Confederate Army of Tennessee gave chase and laid siege of the Army of the Cumberland and Chattanooga. Union Major General Ulysses S. Grant arrived in October and began organizing a relief effort for the army and the city of Chattanooga. When Sherman failed to dislodge Cleburne from Tunnel Hill, George Thomas ordered his Army of the Cumberland to attack Missionary Ridge. When the Confederate Army of Tennessee retreated into Georgia, Joseph Hooker's troops gave chase. Standing in Hooker's way was Patrick Cleburne's Division positioned at Ringgold Gap. The resulting battle demonstrated Patrick Cleburne's generalship.
