John A. McClernand: Fort Donelson | Part 5

Those who discuss John A. McClernand's Civil War record usually label him as simply a political general. That assessment is correct but he was a good general. He may not have been a military genius, but he consistently performed well. However, he did not get along with West Pointers and his constant breaking of military protocol to inform President Abraham Lincoln of his accomplishments irritated the Union high command. Nevertheless, we need to view McClernand as a more than capable commander with a little too much ambition. In this video, McClernand takes a prominent role in the battles for Fort Henry and Fort Donelson. He also comes into conflict with Ulysses S. Grant.
