India, home to nearly 75% of the world’s tiger population, recorded 166 tiger deaths in 2025, a sharp rise of 40 compared to 2024, according to data from the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). Alarmingly, 31 of the dead were cubs, highlighting growing stress within tiger habitats.
Madhya Pradesh, known as India’s “tiger state,” accounted for the highest number with 55 deaths, followed by Maharashtra, Kerala, and Assam. Experts point to territorial infighting caused by habitat saturation and shrinking corridors as the primary reason, rather than poaching.
Wildlife experts note that tiger numbers have surged rapidly—from 2,967 in 2018 to 3,682 in 2022—without a proportional expansion of forest space. Young and dispersing tigers are increasingly dying in clashes with resident adults, especially in high-density reserves like Pench Tiger Reserve.
Officials maintain that every death is treated as a poaching case until proven otherwise, with strong enforcement by the State Tiger Strike Force. The data underscores a critical conservation challenge: saving tigers now depends as much on space and corridors as on protection.
