Yemen is once again facing the possibility of division as UAE-backed separatists move toward independence. The Southern Transitional Council (STC) has announced a two-year transition plan to establish an independent state called South Arabia, reviving memories of a divided Yemen that existed until 1990.

The announcement comes amid escalating violence, with Saudi-led coalition airstrikes killing at least 20 STC fighters in southern Yemen, particularly in the resource-rich Hadramawt region. Tensions between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have intensified, exposing deep rifts within the anti-Houthi camp.

STC President Aidaros Al-Zubaidi warned that independence could be declared earlier if dialogue fails or if further military attacks occur. Meanwhile, Iran-backed Houthi rebels continue to control northern Yemen, underscoring the complex and fragmented nature of the conflict. The unfolding crisis raises serious questions about Yemen’s unity, regional power rivalries, and prospects for long-term peace.
