The Strait of Hormuz once again became the center of global attention in 2026, highlighting how a narrow sea passage can shake the entire world economy. From missile and drone attacks on oil tankers to the temporary closure of the strait, the crisis disrupted nearly 20–25% of global oil supply. Iran’s strategic use of selective access, followed by a “Pay-to-Pass” system, demonstrated how maritime chokepoints can be turned into powerful economic tools.

The response from the United States, under Donald Trump, further escalated tensions, turning the region into a stage for power projection. However, the announcement by Abbas Araghchi to reopen the strait brought temporary relief to global markets, leading to a drop in oil prices and restoring partial stability.
